Mu Cidian looked at Wan Quan.
He studied her extreme and furious state.
He said, “You should rest well, I don’t want to argue with you over these things.”
“What do you mean you don’t want to argue with me, Mu Cidian? You must choose between me and Xin Zaozao now,” she demanded.
“Mom,” his tone was cold, “avoiding an argument with you doesn’t mean that I’m backing down; rather, it’s because I do not want to exhaust all my feelings towards you!”
Wan Quan glared at Mu Cidian.
“You rest now.” He turned and sat on the couch nearby.
He did not leave, but he certainly would not be the one to engage in a conversation.
Wan Quan, still steaming, held back from arguing with Mu Cidian.
She clearly understood that even if she were to lay on her deathbed, Mu Cidian would not sever ties with Xin Zaozao.
She must find an alternate plan.
For the following few days, Wan Quan no longer caused a fuss.
Though she still kept her displeasure with Mu Cidian quite apparent.
Lei Qian would visit often even though Mu Cidian had repeatedly asked her not to. Regardless, she came every day to deliver soup to Wan Quan.
Half a month passed in the blink of an eye.
The doctor rechecked Wan Quan’s condition and concluded that conservative treatment was no longer a viable option. They planned to have another operation in two days.
Upon hearing about the surgery, Wan Quan was slightly frightened.
Having heard some things from the doctor over this period, she understood the severity of her condition and consequently softened her attitude somewhat.
The surgery was confirmed.
Every day, Mu Cidian would accompany Wan Quan until 9 p.m., then he would leave.
More often than not, he would leave with Lei Qian.
Tonight was no different.
Lei Qian drove Mu Cidian home.
While in the passenger seat, Mu Cidian asked Lei Qian, “Haven’t you been going to work recently?”
“The company has been downsizing recently, and I was included,” Lei Qian laughed.
The truth was that she had resigned.
She knew that Mu Cidian did not have feelings for her but...
With the hostility between Wan Quan and Xin Zaozao, it seemed difficult for them to be together.
If Mu Cidian and Xin Zaozao could not be together...
She was content with being a fallback option and had no intentions of stealing him away deliberately.
She was simply waiting.
And if the wait proved fruitless, so be it.
“You’ve worked hard during this time,” thanked Mu Cidian.
“It was all voluntary,” she responded.
“Lei Qian, I’ve told you before that I will not fall for you, right?” asked Mu Cidian.
Lei Qian nodded, “I never hoped that you would fall for me. I just happened to be free during this period and decided to accompany Auntie. I know that the relationship between you and Auntie isn’t good, so I hoped that with my presence, things would be less tense between you two. You are imagining things.”
Mu Cidian looked at Lei Qian.
Lei Qian bit her lip, “Please do not misunderstand me. I have no intention of separating you from Xin Zaozao.”
“My mother might have said some things that make you waver, but I must tell you very clearly, nothing she promised can be fulfilled.”
Lei Qian nodded.
Mu Cidian didn’t say more.
He was cold to her.
Mu Cidian smiled suggestively.
Only then did Xin Zaozao understand.
Her face turned beet red.
She was already in a bad mood and now Mu Cidian dared to make this kind of joke with her.
She turned her body to one side.
Mu Cidian sat down beside Xin Zaozao.
Xin Zaozao purposely moved a little farther away.
Mu Cidian pulled her closer into his embrace.
Xin Zaozao shifted uncomfortably.
Mu Cidian held her tightly.
He said, “Did you hear what Lei Qian said?”
Xin Zaozao kept shifting her body, not answering.
“Sometimes I can’t help being too charming.”
“What are you boasting about,” Xin Zaozao was a little irritated.
“Finally willing to talk?” Mu Cidian smiled.
“Let me go.”
“If you keep wriggling like this, I can’t guarantee what I’ll do, like the thing I mentioned before.”
Xin Zaozao quietened instantly.
Mu Cidian felt her quiet down and a smile spread across his face.
Xin Zaozao said, intentionally sounding casual, “Lei Qian is such a good girl, are you willing to let her down?”
“Are you really jealous?”
“I just think it’s a pity. A girl has loved you for so many years, not asking for anything in return but wanting to be by your side, I find it really touching.”
“So why weren’t you moved?” Mu Cidian asked.
“How do you know I wasn’t moved,” Xin Zaozao frowned.
“I’ve loved you for so many years, not asking for anything in return but wanting to be by your side, aren’t you moved?” Mu Cidian asked.
Xin Zaozao’s heart fluttered.
Mu Cidian still held her in his embrace.
The two of them fell silent for a while.
After a while, Xin Zaozao said, “Mu Cidian, you really have no shame.”
“Where am I shameless?”
“The 200k I pay every month, is that for a dog?”
“...” Mu Cidian had no words.
The next second he couldn’t help but chuckle.
Xin Zaozao felt bewildered by Mu Cidian’s laughter.
Mu Cidian let go of Xin Zaozao.
He kept her sitting on his lap, facing each other.
Mu Cidian asked, “If I don’t take the 200k, will you be moved?”
“If you don’t take the 200k, you’ll only think of asking for more,” Xin Zaozao firmly believed. “Don’t even think about it.”
“What do I need to do to move you?” Mu Cidian asked.
“Lei Qian is such a great girl and she didn’t move you, what makes you think you can move me?”
Mu Cidian chuckled.
She’s right.
When it comes to matters of the heart, what’s hardest to bear is mutual hurt!
